Twitterive Prologue
Although this was a difficult assignment, the process of getting from the starting line to the finish line was a very interesting journey. When sitting down to start this assignment, I believed that my story was going to go in a completely different direction than it ended up going. At first, I wanted to focus on the actions of the characters involved, but it wound up being focused on the relationship between the characters and the interactions that they have. According to the core values of the Writing Arts major, writing Arts students will understand the impact evolving technologies have on the creation of written texts. This assignment forced us to be able to learn how to use different types of technologies in relation to writing. We were asked to use multi-modal forms of technology like Twitter, Weebly, Pixton, YouTube, and just pictures from the internet to create a story that was well-developed.
When thinking about a repetend for this story, it occurred to me that I wanted the main character, Lucy, to have a mantra of sorts. I wanted her to be able to use this mantra to get through the experience of meeting her boyfriend's roommates for the first time. I thought about my experience with meeting new roommates for the first time, and all I could think of was reminding myself to remain calm and not be too nervous. The word "calm" was what I searched for when developing this mantra for Lucy, and the quote, "Slow down, calm down, don’t worry, and don’t hurry. Trust the process” really stuck out for me. It was quote that produced a sense of strength for the character, and that was exactly what I was looking for.
I believe that this project really helped my achieve success in the first core value of the Writing Arts Department. The first core value states, "Writing Arts students will demonstrate understanding of a variety of genre conventions and exhibit rhetorical adaptability in applying those conventions." By analyzing all of the possibilities that I had for creating my Twitterive, I became aware of the immense about of genre conventions that there are. I created my own comics, made Wordle images, along with my prose and general pictures. I was able to enjoy writing in a completely different context than writing a paper or reading a novel. Not only did this project help me achieve core value one, but it also helped me achieve success in core value six. This core value states, "Writing Arts students will understand the impact evolving technologies have on the creation of written texts." This didn't come from the process of creating the Twitterive, but it came from the end result. Being proud of my work, I sent the link to a few of my friends. They were amazed by all of the different genres that I used to create my Twitterive. It was this that inspired them to use these conventions in their own writing and projects for their courses. It was so interesting to see how their work was transformed by these conventions as well, even though they were not assigned them.
